interference
n 1: a policy of intervening in the affairs of other countries
[synonym: {intervention}, {interference}] [ant:
{noninterference}, {nonintervention}]
2: the act of hindering or obstructing or impeding [synonym:
{hindrance}, {hinderance}, {interference}]
3: electrical or acoustic activity that can disturb
communication [synonym: {noise}, {interference}, {disturbance}]
4: (American football) blocking a player's path with your body;
"he ran interference for the quarterback"
5: any obstruction that impedes or is burdensome [synonym:
{hindrance}, {hinderance}, {hitch}, {preventive},
{preventative}, {encumbrance}, {incumbrance}, {interference}]

Interference \In`ter*fer"ence\, n. [See {Interfere}.]
[1913 Webster]
1. The act or state of interfering; as, the stoppage of a
machine by the interference of some of its parts; a
meddlesome interference in the business of others.
[1913 Webster]

2. (Physics) The mutual influence, under certain conditions,
as from streams of light, or pulsations of sound, or,
generally, two waves or vibrations of any kind, producing
certain characteristic phenomena, as colored fringes, dark
bands, or darkness, in the case of light, silence or
increased intensity in sounds; neutralization or
superposition of waves generally.
[1913 Webster]

Note: The term is most commonly applied to light, and the
undulatory theory of light affords the proper
explanation of the phenomena which are considered to be
produced by the superposition of waves, and are thus
substantially identical in their origin with the
phenomena of heat, sound, waves of water, and the like.
[1913 Webster]

3. (Patent Law) The act or state of interfering, or of
claiming a right to the same invention.
[1913 Webster]

{Interference figures} (Optics), the figures observed when
certain sections of crystallized bodies are viewed in
converging polarized light; thus, a section of a uniaxial
crystal, cut normal to the vertical axis, shows a series
of concentric colored rings with a single black cross; --
so called because produced by the interference of luminous
waves.

{Interference fringe}. (Optics) See {Fringe}.

  • Wave interference - Wikipedia
In physics, interference is a phenomenon in which two coherent waves are combined by adding their intensities or displacements with due consideration for their phase difference
  • Interference | Definition, Examples, Facts | Britannica
Interference, in physics, the net effect of the combination of two or more wave trains moving on intersecting or coincident paths The effect is that of the addition of the amplitudes of the individual waves at each point affected by more than one wave
  • INTERFERENCE | English meaning - Cambridge Dictionary
On the radio, television, or telephone, interference is noise, lines, etc , that prevent a clear sound or picture from being received Interference between two waves happens when they have the same frequency and produce a force that is either stronger or weaker than one wave alone
  • 16. 6: Interference of Waves - Physics LibreTexts
Add a second source or a pair of slits to create an interference pattern You can observe one source or two sources Using two sources, you can observe the interference patterns that result from varying the frequencies and the amplitudes of the sources
  • What is interference in physics? - California Learning Resource Network
Interference is a fundamental concept in physics that describes the phenomenon where two or more waves overlap and combine to form a new wave pattern This can occur with various types of waves, including light, sound, and water waves
  • What is Interference? - BYJUS
Interference is what happens when two or more waves meet each other Depending on the overlapping waves’ alignment of peaks and troughs, they might add up, or they can partially or entirely cancel each other
  • What is interference and its types? - Physics Network
There are two different types of interference: proactive interference and retroactive interference What are the 4 kinds of interference?
  • interference - Physics High
Explore how waves interact to create patterns of reinforcement and cancellation, shaping our understanding of light, sound, and beyond Perfect for students, researchers, and enthusiasts, our resource demystifies interference, With interactive examples,
  • What Is Interference Of Light? » ScienceABC
Interference of light is the phenomenon that occurs when two waves of light meet and the crest of one wave cancels out the trough of the other wave One of the fundamental properties of light is its ability to interfere with itself
  • Interference - Olympus - Life Science
The definition of interference in physics is the superposition of waves, causing an increase or decrease in the amplitude of the resulting wave Most people observe some type of optical interference every day, but do not realize what is occurring to produce this phenomenon
