nucleus
n 1: a part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible
for growth and reproduction [synonym: {nucleus}, {cell
nucleus}, {karyon}]
2: the positively charged dense center of an atom
3: a small group of indispensable persons or things; "five
periodicals make up the core of their publishing program"
[synonym: {core}, {nucleus}, {core group}]
4: (astronomy) the center of the head of a comet; consists of
small solid particles of ice and frozen gas that vaporizes on
approaching the sun to form the coma and tail
5: any histologically identifiable mass of neural cell bodies in
the brain or spinal cord
6: the central structure of the lens that is surrounded by the
cortex [synonym: {lens nucleus}, {nucleus}]

Nucleus \Nu"cle*us\, n.; pl. E. {Nucleuses}, L. {Nuclei}. [L., a
kernel, dim. fr. nux, nucis, nut. Cf. {Newel} post.]
[1913 Webster]
1. A kernel; hence, a central mass or point about which
matter is gathered, or to which accretion is made; the
central or material portion; -- used both literally and
figuratively.
[1913 Webster]

It must contain within itself a nucleus of truth.
--I. Taylor.
[1913 Webster]

2. (Astron.) The body or the head of a comet.
[1913 Webster]

3. (Bot.)
(a) An incipient ovule of soft cellular tissue.
(b) A whole seed, as contained within the seed coats.
[1913 Webster]

4. (Biol.) A body, usually spheroidal, in a eukaryotic cell,
distinguished from the surrounding protoplasm by a
difference in refrangibility and in behavior towards
chemical reagents, which contains the chromosomal genetic
material, including the chromosomal DNA. It is more or
less protoplasmic, and consists of a clear fluid
(achromatin) through which extends a network of fibers
(chromatin) in which may be suspended a second rounded
body, the nucleolus (see {Nucleoplasm}). See {Cell
division}, under {Division}.
[1913 Webster PJC]

Note: The nucleus is sometimes termed the endoplast or
endoblast, and in the protozoa is supposed to be
concerned in the female part of the reproductive
process. See {Karyokinesis}.
[1913 Webster]

5. (Zool.)
(a) The tip, or earliest part, of a univalve or bivalve
shell.
(b) The central part around which additional growths are
added, as of an operculum.
(c) A visceral mass, containing the stomach and other
organs, in Tunicata and some mollusks.
[1913 Webster]

  • [FREE] Which subatomic particles are found within the nucleus? Select . . .
Thus, to answer the question: the particles found within the nucleus of an atom are both protons and neutrons Electrons, in contrast, reside in the space around the nucleus, contributing only a small amount to the overall mass of the atom Understanding these basic components is essential for grasping the structure of matter
  • Name one type of cell that does not contain a nucleus. - Brainly. com
Cells Without a Nucleus One type of cell that does not contain a nucleus is a prokaryotic cell Prokaryotic cells are defined by the absence of a membrane-bound nucleus; instead, their genetic material, which is DNA, is located in the cytoplasm An example of a prokaryotic cell is a bacterium These cells are typically found in single-celled
  • [FREE] Which flowchart correctly lists the structures in order from . . .
The correct flowchart listing the structures in order from smallest to largest is: gene → DNA → **chromosome **→ nucleus The organization of structures within a cell is hierarchical, according to the fields of genetics and cellular biology, with each level including smaller parts that combine to generate larger entities A gene is a
  • Which type of cell has no nucleus? - Brainly. com
No Nucleus: The absence of a nucleus is the defining feature of prokaryotes Size : Prokaryotic cells are generally smaller than eukaryotic cells Structure : They lack membrane-bound organelles found in eukaryotic cells, such as mitochondria or chloroplasts
  • Transcription occurs in the - Brainly. com
This occurs in the nucleus where the entirety of an organism's DNA is housed and protected Following transcription, the mRNA is processed and then transported out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm In the cytoplasm, translation occurs, which is the reading of mRNA by ribosomes to synthesize a polypeptide chain, which will fold into a
  • What is a key difference between chemical and nuclear reactions?
A nucleus with a large mass will be on the left side, and there will be electrons in the equation A nucleus with a large mass will be on the right side, and there will be neutrons in the equation Nuclear Processes Unit Test 9 of 189 of 18 Items Question How is fission different from a simple chemical reaction?(1 point) Protons cause fission
  • Label the steps of protein synthesis and the organelles involved in . . .
This occurs in the nucleus During the ending of transcription, the completed mRNA strand detaches from DNA and **exits the nucleus and goes into a ribosome in the cytoplasm In the ribosome, translation **occurs where the genetic code in mRNA is read and protein is synthesized
  • [FREE] Which statement best describes the electrons in this . . .
Electrons are indeed negatively charged and located outside the nucleus, which aligns with our understanding of atomic structure Statement D: The electrons are negatively charged particles located inside the nucleus This is False While electrons are negatively charged, they do not reside inside the nucleus
  • Which of the following best describes prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
It follows that prokaryotes' DNA is not contained within a nucleus **Eukaryotic **organisms can have several cells or only one cell Eukaryotes make up all animal life Protists, fungi, and plants are examples of additional eukaryotes Therefore, **Prokaryotes **do not have a nucleus, eukaryotes have a nucleus
