myosin
n 1: the commonest protein in muscle; a globulin that combines
with actin to form actomyosin

Myosin \My"o*sin\, n. [Gr. my^s, myo`s a muscle.] (Physiol.
Chem.)
A protein present in muscle, serving as the principle
contractile protein in muscle contraction.

Note: It was earlier considered as being formed in the
process of coagulation which takes place in {rigor
mortis}. See {Muscle plasma}, under {Plasma}.
[1913 Webster PJC]

Note: Myosin belongs to the group of globulins. It is
insoluble in water, but soluble in dilute solution of
salt, and is especially characterized by being
completely precipitated by saturation of its solutions
with salt.
[1913 Webster]

  • Myosin - Wikipedia
Myosins ( ˈmaɪəsɪn, - oʊ - [1][2]) are a family of motor proteins (though most often protein complexes) best known for their roles in muscle contraction and in a wide range of other motility processes in eukaryotes They are ATP -dependent and responsible for actin -based motility
  • What Is Myosin? Structure, Function, and Roles - Biology Insights
Myosin is a motor protein that converts chemical energy from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) into mechanical force, facilitating movement on a cellular level This large protein family is responsible for a wide range of movements in eukaryotic cells, from muscle contraction to cell division
  • Myosin - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Myosin is a molecular motor that converts chemical energy into mechanical force [1]
  • The myosin superfamily at a glance - PMC
We first describe the basics of myosin mechanoenzymology and motility Next, we discuss myosin–cargo interactions and present a summary of the roles of myosin proteins in cells, focusing on actin-based projections and the endomembrane system
  • Myosin - Washington University in St. Louis
Anchors terminal actin filaments to subsarcolemmal protein complexes
  • Myosin - Structure, Function, Mechanism, Significance
Myosin is a fundamental motor protein that plays a vital role in muscle contraction, intracellular transport, and various cellular movements It interacts with actin filaments and uses energy derived from ATP hydrolysis to generate mechanical force
  • Myosin - New World Encyclopedia
A major contractile protein in muscle cells, myosin serves as a "molecular motor" for the conversion of chemical energy into cellular contraction (White et al 1998) Without actin, myosin is just another chain of amino acids in muscles
  • Myosin: Anatomy and Physiology I Study Guide | Fiveable
Myosin is a type of motor protein found in muscle cells that, through its interaction with actin, plays a crucial role in muscle contraction and movement It converts chemical energy in the form of ATP to mechanical energy, thus enabling the muscles to contract
