multiplexing
多工

1. (Or "multiple access") Combining several
signals for transmission on some shared medium (e.g. a
telephone wire). The signals are combined at the transmitter
by a multiplexor (a "mux") and split up at the receiver by a
demultiplexor. The communications channel may be shared
between the independent signals in one of several different
ways: {time division multiplexing}, {frequency division
multiplexing}, or {code division multiplexing}.

If the inputs take turns to use the output channel ({time
division multiplexing}) then the output {bandwidth} need be no
greater than the maximum bandwidth of any input.

If many inputs may be active simultaneously then the output
bandwidth must be at least as great as the total bandwidth of
all simultaneously active inputs. In this case the
multiplexor is also known as a {concentrator}.

2. Writing multiple {logical} copies of {data}
{files}. Placing the copies on totally separate {paths} to
{mirror}ed {devices} greatly reduces the probability of all
copies being corrupt. Multiplexing differs from mirroring in
that mirroring takes one data file and copies it to many
devices, thus making it possible to copy a corrupt file many
times. Multiplexing writes the data files to many places
simultaneously; there is no "original" data file.

  • Multiplexing - Wikipedia
In telecommunications and computer networking, multiplexing (sometimes contracted to muxing) is a method by which multiple analog or digital signals are combined into one signal over a shared medium The aim is to share a scarce resource—a physical transmission medium
  • What is multiplexing and how does it work? - TechTarget
Multiplexing, or muxing, is a way of sending multiple signals or streams of information over a communications link at the same time in the form of a single, complex signal The goal is to enhance the channel's transmission efficiency and speed, even over long distances
  • Multiplexing (Channel Sharing) in Computer Network
Multiplexing is the sharing of a medium or bandwidth It is the process in which multiple signals coming from multiple sources are combined and transmitted over a single communication physical line Multiplexing in computer networks is done using a device Multiplexer called MUX that takes 'n' input lines to generate a single output line On the
  • Multiplexing - Network Encyclopedia
Multiplexing in networking is the technique of combining separate communication channels from different sources into a single channel for transmission over a wide area network (WAN) link For example, you can combine input from various pieces of data terminal equipment (DTE) using a multiplexer and transmit it over a single digital data line
  • An Intro to Multiplexing: Basis of Telecommunications
Understanding Multiplexing Telecommunications such as radio, telephone, and television all use a method called multiplexing--shortened to "muxing"--to transmit and receive information Multiplexing was designed to send numerous analog signals or digital streams through one common transmission line
